Roberto Martinez has to settle for a point in his first game as David Moyes's successor after his Everton side shared four goals in an entertaining second half at Norwich.
The Everton team had a familiar look as none of Martinez's summer signings started.
Norwich manager Chris Hughton had spent £25million on new faces over the summer but injury robbed Gary Hooper, the £5million capture from Celtic, the chance to start up front. But fellow newcomers Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Nathan Redmond were included.
A half of few chances ended with Martinez's men looking likelier to break the deadlock and that almost occurred within four minutes of the restart when Seamus Coleman crossed only for Kevin Mirallas to find the side-netting.
The first name on the score-sheet turned out to be Steven Whittaker's in the 51st minute. The right-back, having seen the ball bounce off Leighton Baines, nipped past Marouane Fellaini before curling left-footed past Tim Howard. The ball hit the far post but the Scot was first to the rebound and this time found the net.
A response was needed and 19-year-old Ross Barkley, already impressive in midfield, provided it on the hour mark with a rasping 20-yarder after Coleman and Fellaini had combined on the right.
Suddenly it was 2-1 as John Ruddy could only parry Nikica Jelavic's close-range shot and Coleman sprinted in to tap home.
Again Norwich turned to Whittaker and the Scot's mis-hit shot ended up becoming the ball into the box van Wolfswinkel had been waiting for all afternoon and the Netherlands striker powered a header past Howard.
Ruddy pulled off a fine save late on to deny substitute Steven Naismith, with Russell Martin throwing himself in the way of Jelavic's follow-up.
